It’s Tuesday afternoon, and I’m on call for work.
Playing the waiting game of “will I get used/sent somewhere today or get paid to sit at home?”
A few hours later scheduling is calling me, and I am packing my bags to go to one of my favorite mountain states.
Next up is a 17 hour layover in the quaint and charming city of Spokane, Washington.
Planning on traveling there or having a layover soon?
I adventured around and found what you need to do!
Grab a coffee and delicious home made pastry at Madeline’s Cafe & Patisserie
Located at 415 W Main Ave, Spokane, WA 99201
Another great coffee shop spot to check out is Atticus Coffee & Gifts. Check out the store first and grab a sweatshirt to bundle up in and snag a new book to read and enjoy with your cup of joe.
After getting an energy boost, wander to the Spokane Falls. A waterfall which you can take a skyride over to enjoy the views of the falls and city of Spokane. Winter is also the perfect time to enjoy the skyride so you can stay warm and bundled up while enjoying the rushing water views. The skyride costs $7.75 for adults and $5.75 for children. If you have AAA you can save a dollar off per ride. The ride lasts about 20 minutes round trip.
During the winter holiday season, an ice skating rink pops up, and you can also enjoy a ride (or your youngin’s can) on a beautiful merri go round.
The city also has a great shopping scene. Make sure to stop in Pottery Place Plus if looking and wanting to bring back home something handmade and local. Plus Place Pottery offers a great selection of craft goods from local Spokane Artisans. Make sure to say hello to Steven, and check out his wood work masterpieces, and enjoy a genuine conversation. A Spokane local who can tell you all the insight on the town, things to do, where to eat, and so much more.
On my layovers I love meeting locals and learning their story, fun facts about the town, local hidden gems, and so much more. As I’ve come to learn on my travels, it truly is a small world after all. I learned Steven has a son who lives in Duluth, Minnesota! One of my favorite home state cities.
Steven’s Recommendations on local Spokane things to do:
- Go to a Gonzagen Women’s college Basketball game
- Check out the Centennial Trail right along the river
- Rent a car and go to Palouse Falls and Riverside State Park
He also recommended to stop by the Davenport Grand Hotel. During the holiday season it is decorated all things Christmas and is so pretty to walk around.
And there you have it! An itinerary to give you a great glimpse of Spokane, Washington in the winter time.
Thanks so much for carrying on along on this quick layover trip adventure with me! I hope I have given you some great ideas for when you plan yours.
Thanks for carrying along on this adventure with me!

I’m so glad you got to take a ride on the skyride and visit the Davenport! The Davenport is awesome throughout the year, but it’s really magical in the winter/for the holidays 🙂
Awesome write up of my hometown!
Really nice blog and beautiful pictures would love to visit that places once.
