Duluth:
A beautiful city in northern Minnesota, located by Lake Superior, one of the Greatest Lakes of the Great Lakes, and a major port city in the U.S.
A tourist destination in the Midwest, and a popular college town and University choice.
I ended up having a free weekend not working, which meant it was the perfect time and opportunity to visit my cousin who goes to school there before she graduates this spring. This also meant that I was also going to “relive my college years.”
And boy did I…
Friday afternoon, I started the two hour drive up to the lakeside city.
Road Trip Essentials: Some Good Tunes!
Although with today’s technology we have so many apps and streaming devices to listen to music. I love to be “old school” by burning and creating a CD for any fun road trip/adventure I go on.
Check out My Duluth CD/Playlist I created here:
You can add it to your Spotify playlists if you would like, and are in need of some new car jams/tunes to jam out to!
We grabbed dinner at Cloud 9, An Asian Bistro and Japanese Restaurant,
Located at: 308 S Lake Ave, Duluth, MN 55802
Close to Canal Park, which is filled with shops and a ton of local spots to eat and drink.
To continue on the Friday Night Fun, a popular spot to check out is:
Spurs on First: A Downtown Duluth Entertainment Capitol providing great beer specials and entertaining live music…. Make sure to have your dancing shoes on, and your singing vocals ready!
After a fun night out of singing, dancing, and drinking, a laid back lazy Saturday was/is needed.
This was the first weekend that the sun was actually shining and the the weather was WARM! (The previous weekend an epic snow blizzard came through, dowsing the town and all of Minnesota with out of this world amounts of snow.)
For a perfect casual Saturday afternoon, stop at Northern Waters Smokehaus
Located at: 394 S Lake Ave #106, Duluth, MN 55802 in the Dewitt-Seitz Marketplace.
You can eat inside at the restaurant, or if the weather is nice, grab a sandwich from the Deli and enjoy it outside!
My recommendation: The Slammin’ Gordon! (Smoked salmon, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, cilantro, oil & vinegar on a pillowy naan.) SO GOOD!
A perfect spot to enjoy your gourmet sandwich is by crossing through the Ariel Lift Bridge and making your way over to Park Point Beach. Grab a blanket, put on some tunes, and you have the perfect afternoon picnic spot.
Due to the snow storm the weekend before, we enjoyed some n(ice) views of Lake Superior.
Only in Minnesota can one say that they’ve been to a frozen beach, while enjoying the sun and warm weather.
Looking for something fun and a popular destination all the local’s go to on a Saturday night?
Make sure to stop at Grandma’s Sport’s Garden
Located at: 425 S Lake Ave, Duluth, MN 55802
A college and young adult stomping ground (that doesn’t get poppin’ until 10:30pm or later)
Saturday Nights they have $5.00 Long Island Pitchers. A deal you can’t miss out on… (but a hangover you can…)
A few of my favorite “Avoid getting a hangover/I had too much too drink” remedies:
- Drink water between consuming drinks.
- Know your limit. Sometimes all it takes is one extra drink to put you over your limit.
- Avoid mixing different types of alcohol. It’s best to just stick to one.
- Make sure you eat something, a meal before going out for the night. Consuming drinks on an empty stomach is just an overall bad idea.
- Drink lot’s of water before going to bed.
- Pedialyte = A Life/ Hangover Savior. Drink before going to bed, and also the next day to refuel on electrolytes that your body needs.
- Ibuprofen/Advil helps with the headache pain.
- Sleep
And just like that, you’ll have a fun filled spring weekend exploring Duluth, and the beauty and fun this city has to offer.
Thanks for stowing away on this weekend filled getaway, and carrying along on my adventure with me! I can’t wait for you to start planning and getting started on yours.
Thank YOU guys for reading <3

Being a Duluthian, I always get excited when people make the trip up there and talk about the good times they had!
Glad you were able to avoid getting regrettably drunk at Grandma’s Sports Garden. Somewhere in fluid time, the college-age version of me wishes he could have done that even one time.
Haha, that just shows how good of a time Grandma’s is/can be! I always love going up to Duluth! If you have any other great recommendations on things to do, see, and check out there I would love to know! I love going to all the local hotspots 🙂
Wow, this is super wonderfully fun and fabulous Carly. Great work.
Thanks so much Wayne!!
Love Duluth! That picnic spot looks perfect on the beach, even if there was a lot of ice 🙂
It’s a great spot to have a picnic and soak up the sun and enjoy the great views of Lake Superior! I highly recommend checking it out! 🙂
I love your post. We went to Duluth this winter for the first time and loved it so much. Will have to try these restaurants.
Thank you! :). And yes you definitely do! They were oh so good!!
